ZNETBOOT is a utility for launching a guest operating system onto a VM/CMS virtual machine. Once the guest operating system has been booted, CMS is out of the picture. But ZNETBOOT itself requires CMS until then. Historically, to install Linux on z/VM requires a number of manual steps which are terribly foreign to those who are unfamiliar with the CMS and z/VM environment. ZNETBOOT allows that everything about the particular guest operating system can be defined in a single file. It is especially well suited to installing Linux. It can also be used for bringing up a Linux "rescue system".
